Aegiq, a UK-based photonic quantum computing company, and the National Epitaxy Facility (NEF), a leader in semiconductor epitaxial materials, structures and devices, have extended their long-standing collaboration to accelerate next-generation photonic quantum technologies and reinforce the UK’s compound semiconductor supply chain.
NEF has played a key role in supporting Aegiq’s research and early-stage development, supplying high-quality epitaxial growth capabilities that have enabled rapid iteration and device optimisation. In a field where the pace of advancement is accelerating, speed of execution is critical. NEF’s fast turnaround times have allowed Aegiq to shorten learning cycles while maintaining momentum at the forefront of photonic quantum computing.
This collaboration underscores the importance of the UK’s open-access semiconductor infrastructure in bridging fundamental research with scalable quantum and photonic technologies.
“NEF’s mission is to equip the UK research community with advanced semiconductor epitaxial materials, structures and devices, enabling it to compete at the highest level globally in this rapidly evolving field,” said Professor Jon Heffernan FREng, Director of the NEF. “Through collaborative partnering with Aegiq from its earliest stages, we’ve supported rapid progression from prototypes to deployable photonic quantum computing solutions creating impressive economic impact, high skills jobs in quantum technology and a truly pioneering UK quantum company.”
“High-quality epitaxial growth and fast iteration cycles are fundamental to advancing photonic quantum technologies,” said Scott Dufferwiel, CEO of Aegiq. “NEF’s capabilities have enabled us to optimise device performance and accelerate development timelines. This continued partnership will be important as we scale towards more complex and deployable quantum systems.”
